With a combination of highly experienced tutors, state of the art facilities and a mixture of qualifications which combine the traditional academic approach with a practical application, the engineering department in Cronton Sixth Form is offering students the opportunity to secure amazing university places and sort after degree apprenticeships all leading to highly successful engineering careers in the future.

After the opening of the IDEA Centre; a STEM centre with industry standard facilities in 2017 and the addition of new vocational courses including the Professional Engineering Programme the number of students choosing to study a vocational engineering course at Cronton has increased year on year. Over the past year, the keen engineering students have had the opportunity to experience many trips, workshops and masterclasses including an amazing trip to San Francisco, CERN in Geneva, the Annual Inspire Summit and educational trips to Jaguar Land Rover and a design and build workshop at Alton Towers with many more international trips planned for the coming year.

As well as fantastic trips to India and Berlin planned for the coming year, new students will benefit from taking part in the new ‘Higher Aspirations Programme’ at the College. Engineering students can support their university applications by taking part in the programme in partnership with Liverpool John Moores University. The programme allows students to take part in over ten trips to the university campus and complete part of their assignments on site. This will provide them with experience of university lectures, tours of the facilities and day to day university life all designed to inspire students to further their studies.

The class of 2019 received amazing results with students progressing onto engineering degrees and higher level apprenticeships including Loughborough University and Scottish Power.  This has inspired current students as they begin to submit their UCAS application forms with students applying for some of the top universities in the country including the University of Oxford to study engineering courses.

Jo Hall, Head of Engineering at Cronton said, “The Engineering department at Cronton is going from strength to strength with new industry relevant qualifications, facilities and partnerships including new for 2020 a Level 3 Diploma in Digital Built Environment and the plan to add the HND in engineering qualification as the progression to the HNC we already offer.

“We are extremely proud of the students who gained amazing university places this year and wish them lots of luck for their degree courses.

“All of the staff and students are now looking ahead at the exciting partnerships, international trips, new qualifications and events including our planned celebrations for Engineers Week early next year and are hoping to continue offer students the best start to their future careers in engineering.”

Business students at Cronton Sixth Form College visited the fantastic Polish cultural centre of Krakow, wandering the alleyways and cobbled streets of the Old Town and Market Square to learn about the history of the great city as part of their Cultural Enrichment Programme.

Krakow Business Trip

Students had the opportunity to visit the magnificent UNESCO World Heritage site of the Wieliczka Salt Mine to learn about the history of the salt industry and the mining of rock salt stretching back to Neolithic times. They were able to take in the incredible rock sculptures, carved statues and cathedral like rooms that the mines proudly display.

Krakow Business Trip

Solemn visits to both Auschwitz-Birkenau and Oskar Schindler’s factory provided a stark reminder of the sacrifice given by those who risked their lives for our freedom during World War 2.

Students also visited Krakow’s extensive Christmas markets to try traditional Polish cuisine and pick a few items up for their Christmas shopping.

Krakow Business Trip

Level 3 Business student, Luke Rotherham said, “I really enjoyed visiting Poland as Krakow is such a nice city to visit in the winter. It was also fascinating to learn about how an industry such as mining for salt has barely changed over thousands of years!”

Bryan Doyle, Business Tutor at Cronton Sixth Form College said, “Taking these wonderful students to one of the most beautiful cities on Earth was a real pleasure! This trip was mainly about enriching the cultural experience of our students and it was fantastic destination to do this. I am excited to show our students the contrast in culture and architecture between this beautiful ancient city and our next destination for the department which is Shanghai in China!”

A Level Psychology students took part in an insightful ‘Life Behind Bars’ session at Cronton Sixth Form which challenged their ideas about prison and helped them to question whether it is the most effective place for the rehabilitation of criminals.

During the day the students had the opportunity to listen to ex criminals who had served time in prison for a variety of crimes. The visitors talked about why they turned to crime, what happened in court, their experience of prison and why some of them reoffended.

Psychology tutor Gemma Stephens said, “These workshops are a fantastic opportunity for our Psychology students and provides them with an insight in to the mind of a criminal. The final option of the Psychology A Level is based around applied Psychology, so having visiting speakers really brings the course to life!

“The extra workshops we offer students, such as ‘Life Behind Bars’ help them with their preparation and experience for their UCAS applications and raises their academic achievements and aspirations. This is demonstrated with so many Psychology students gaining high grades in 2019 and many being inspired to continue studying Psychology at university.”

A Level Psychology students at Cronton Sixth Form College brought their studies to life with an action packed morning of activities by University of Liverpool researcher, Valerie Hawke.

Valerie joined the eager students to explore risk taking and decision making and share her expertise with the students through question and answer sessions and live scenario examples. The key live scenario was a fast paced driving simulator which allowed the students to analyse and decide whether the correct decision was made by the driver.

Psychology-Studens-Welcome-Research-Expert

The morning gave the learners an excellent insight into how Psychological research is conducted which they can take back into their studies and use during future assessments and experiments.

Abbie Leng, A Level Psychology student said, “I thought that the sessions were very interesting because they gave me a great insight into what I would need to include in my own psychology experiments in the future.”

A Level Psychology student, Olivia Cook also commented, “The psychology sessions I took part in were really useful as they allowed me to have first-hand experience and helped develop my understanding of the subject. It was also beneficial to hear from a clinical psychologist and about her experiences within the field.”

A Level students Shannon Sweeney and Dean Leake from Cronton Sixth Form are delighted to have been shortlisted for the final round of the prestigious Frank Moran Young Writers Award.

Shannon, previously of Wade Deacon High School, and Dean, formerly of The Prescot School, are both currently midway through their first year of studies and are already going above and beyond in their chosen subjects. After entering the competition by submitting a fictional piece of writing, the pair were thrilled to find out they had both been shortlisted for the next round. They were invited to attend a ceremony at the Athenaeum in Liverpool with other young talented writers to find out the topic for their finalist entries.

All finalists were handed an envelope with the line ‘We were together an hour before. But…’ inside. Shannon and Dean must continue the story in their own words and submit their entry by March 11th before an overall winner will be announced. Both students are avid members of the College’s Creative Writing Club, where they have had full support in organising and preparing their pieces before submitting. The pair are now back in the enrichment class as preparations for the final round begin.

Stephanie Power, English Literature Tutor at Cronton Sixth Form and Supervisor of the Creative Writing Club said, “I am so proud of Shannon and Dean, both students put in so much work towards this award and now the hard work is paying off! In a technologically driven world – it would seem that the future of communication and story-telling is in very safe hands.  I wish my delightful students every success”
